RICHLAND COUNTY, Ohio (WCMH) — An EF-2 longtrack tornado hit Shelby, Ohio Sunday afternoon, sending six people to the hospital, the National Weather Service said Monday after surveying the damage.

There were no fatalities from the storm. The Shelby YMCA has a shelter open and disaster relief kits for anyone in need.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland surveyed the storm’s path Monday, determining the tornado was EF-2 strength with winds of 120-125 miles per hour and a path of 17 miles long and a half mile wide.

The storm did significant damage to cars, businesses and neighborhoods. One area of significant damage was the Rocket Chevrolet dealership.

“But, our city has a history of being able to, by God’s grace, pick themselves up and move forward and recover and prosper- as we plan on doing on this particular occasion,” said Shelby Mayor Steven Schag.

It’s not just tornado damage the town has had to recover from.

“The city of Shelby has been through many events that have set us back: Floods, straight-line winds, and tornadoes.  This is just the most recent in one of those incidents. We are in the process today of picking up the pieces and moving forward,” said Schag.

The NWS says the tornado started three miles southwest of Shelby around 4:42 p.m. and ended five miles north of Olivesburg in Richland County around 5 p.m.
