COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Ohio State quarterback Matthew Baldwin will enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to a team spokesperson.
The move signals Baldwin’s likely departure from OSU.
Baldwin is a redshirt freshman from Texas who was competing with Justin Fields for the starting quarterback job.
Baldwin’s transfer leaves OSU razor thin at quarterback, behind transfer Justin Fields who will now become the presumed starter.
Fields appeared to have a leg up in the competition but head coach Ryan Day suggested their competition for the starting job would extend well into fall training camp.
Fields and Chris Chugunov are the only scholarship quarterbacks currently on the OSU roster. You can expect OSU will seek a senior transfer quarterback this offseason to boost their depth.
Baldwin went to Lake Travis High School near Austin, TX and led his team to the state championship game in his senior season. He played with receiver Garrett Wilson at Lake Travis, and Wilson is now an early-enrolling freshman at OSU.
