In 2013, Blue Jackets fan Jordan Mills was a college student that did not see any CBJ fan social media sites he liked to follow. So, he decided to start the CBJ Artillery account as a way to connect with other Columbus fans.
One night, he posted to twitter using the hashtag “We Are The 5th Line” slogan as a rallying cry for fans, and a movement was born.
“In basketball you have the 6th man, so we thought, hockey, there’s four lines that go over the ice, so why not make the fans the metaphorical 5th line,” said Mills.
The slogan immediately took off. Within the first day, it was the number one trending topic in Columbus on Twitter. “It’s something that everybody could rally around and hashtag on twitter and that’s what everybody is talking about,” said CBJ Artillery member Kyle Spencer.
Now, the CBJ Artillery has more than 40 thousand followers across all its social media sites.
“We are the 5th Line” now hangs in Nationwide Arena as a permanent fixture of the franchise.
“So, I’ll elbow him (Mills) and whatever and be like, you know you did that, and it’s cool to hear the players, it’s cool to see the organization tweet about the 5th line,” said Spencer.
The CBJ Artillery members host their podcast in a Blue Jackets themed room behind Lamp Apparel in the Short North. Their podcast has even picked up hockey fans internationally. “Canada, United Kingdom, Sweden, Russia…those are our top 5 streamed,” said Mills.
The CBJ Artillery aims to rally fans even more this post-season.
“It’s the best team in Blue Jackets history on paper, and I really feel like they can make a deep run,” said Mills.
Spencer added, “I’m glad that we’re, the Artillery is a big part of that I think, and pushing that fanbase into making something special here.”
