Unsung Hero: Meet the lady making hats for central Ohio homeless

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Melanie Gannon’s only compensation is the happiness she feels when she makes her hats.

It all began about three years ago, when she started came across the Friends of Ernie’s Facebook page; a group which had been donating hats to the homeless. She decided to follow his lead and learned how to crochet. It was then that she began making hats, and hanging them in the area of her South Parsons Avenue neighborhood.

Three years later, she’s still at it.

“I didn’t do this to get anybody to give me anything but in the past 3 years, things have happened and people are there. I had no heat, electricity or gas. At one point Friends of Ernie’s page gave me an electric blanket. I didn’t ask for it. They came out in a blizzard to bring me an electric blanket,” Gannon tells Cabot Rea.

Gannon doesn’t do it for fame, or for money. She does it to bring warmth to her world, one hook and one chain at a time. “My dad taught me give and it shall be given unto you.”
