Worker suspended after peeing while on food line

U.S. & World

A Smithfield Foods employee is accused of urinating on the production line.

The incident happened over the weekend at the packing plant in Smithfield. In the video, obtained by a local TV station, the employee appears to take off his gloves and pee on the production line.

The employee leans up against the counter and relieves himself.  He then puts the gloves back on and continues working.

Smithfield Foods officials confirmed today that the employee was urinating on the line.

Company officials said there was a swift internal investigation and production was immediately stopped.

More than 50,000 pounds of produce was thrown out. Estimates suggest 50,000 pounds of produce  would likely equal roughly 350 hogs and cost the company about $190,000

The processing line was cleaned and all the equipment was sterilized multiple times before operations resumed.
