Woman finds cleaning tablets at the bottom of Starbucks drink

U.S. & World

LAYTON, UT (WCMH) – A Utah woman says she found a nasty surprise at the bottom of her Starbucks drink.

“My last drink of it, it just tasted like burnt rubber, honestly,” Deniece Lee told KSTU.

Lee said she ordered a green tea Frappuccino on ice at the Starbucks inside of Smith’s, a grocery store. Her first cup wasn’t made properly, so she had the store make a second. She said that one tasted ‘off,’ but she drank it anyway.

She drank half the cup on the way home, and set it on the counter while she unloaded groceries.

“My kids came out running saying mom, I think there’s pills, on the bottom of your drink,” said Lee.

She dumped the drink on the front lawn, and two small white tablets fell from the cup. A manager of another Starbucks store told her the tablets might be a cleaner used on the espresso machine.

Starbucks said in a statement:

Smith’s store director and our customer service team have apologized to the customer directly for the mistake and worked to assure her of our commitment to make this right. This mistake should never have been made and both Starbucks and Smith’s are working together to understand how this happened and to remind associates of our cleaning procedures designed to help prevent this type of situation.

Lee said she believes it was an honest mistake, but she does believe Starbucks and the grocery store should cover her medical bills.
