VIDEO: Cat hangs on to roof for dear life on Nebraska highway, owner says he is safe now

U.S. & World

OMAHA, NE (WCMH) — An amazing video shot by a family driving on an interstate shows a van driving at highway speeds with a cat holding on to the roof.

Ronda Rankin and her family captured the bizarre scene Friday night on I-480.

“My daughter says, ‘there’s a cat on that van,’ and I was like ‘oh no, that’s a raccoon.’ My husband’s pulling up closer and I’m like, ‘oh my god, no, that’s a cat,'” Rankin said.

The cat somehow holds on to the van.

“It looked really scared, like, ‘what the heck is going on?'”

Rankin said she signaled to the other driver.

“I said, ‘there’s a cat on your roof,’ and I keep saying, ‘a cat on your roof.’ Then she looks at me and she’s like, ‘oh my God.’ She looks startled, and so immediately they slow down.”

Rankin says she saw the van pull over before it was out of sight.

KETV found the cat’s owner, who assures worried people he is okay.

Michelle Criger told the station her cat, named Rebel, must have been up there for about two miles. She recalled the Rankin family trying to get her attention.

“Just before he came alongside me and started honking, I thought I heard a ‘meow,’ and I didn’t say anything to my boyfriend because I’m thinking to myself, ‘Why would I hear a ‘meow?'”

Criger and her boyfriend pulled over and found Rebel.

“When I got him off the roof of the van, he wasn’t scared at all,” said Criger, according to KETV. “He wasn’t shaking, heart racing, nothing. We were more scared than him.”

Criger says she looks under and on top of the van now every day and night.
