Police in New York say an undocumented immigrant is in custody after a woman was violently raped on the front lawn of her own home.

According to WCBS, Nassau Police arrested Ever Martinez Reyes, 24, on first-degree rape charges. Police say Reyes is accused of following a 36-year-old woman home during the early morning hours of Sept. 28. He allegedly attacked her as soon as she opened the gate to her front yard.

“He assaulted her and knocked her out. He then proceeded to rape her,” Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said at a press conference. “She woke up. He knocked her out again, viciously, and then continued to assault her.”

An anonymous tip led officers to Reyes after police released video from one of the surveillance camera that showed the suspect following the victim.

“The tip came in that he was getting ready to flee to El Salvador,” Ryder said.

WCBS reports that Reyes, a day laborer and landscaper, has no known prior criminal history. He allegedly entered the United States when crossing the border to Texas in 2014.

Reyes faces up to 25 years behind bars if he is convicted.
