U.S. & World

A standoff between the armed driver of an 18-wheeler and authorities has traffic at a standstill on I-10 in Jackson Co. Mississippi.

While originally believed to be a road rage incident between armed truck drivers, according to Marcia Hill with Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the problems started in Alabama when an 18-wheeler caused two accidents driving recklessly on the interstate.

Once the driver was in Mississippi, deputies started pursuing the trucker. He pulled over got out with a machete and came at deputies.

When deputies backed off, the driver got back in the trunk of truck.

He’s now stopped at mile marker 60 on right shoulder in a standoff. Highway patrol, deputies and MDOT are at the scene. A SWAT team is reportedly also at the scene and two of the truck’s tires have been shot out, according to eyewitnesses.

East and westbound lanes are closed between exit 57 and 60.
