Tornado strikes Iowa town; severe weather possible Friday in Ohio

U.S. & World

BONDURANT, IA (WCMH/AP) — A tornado touched down in Bondurant, Iowa Thursday afternoon, closing streets and damaging houses.

Video from the area shows funnel clouds tearing through the area, damaging homes.

A number of people were also taken to the hospital after a tornado slammed into a factory in Pella, further away from Des Moines.

Pella Police Lt. Shane Cox told television station KCCI-TV that some people from the plant were taken to a hospital, but he didn’t know the extent of injuries or the number of people. Emergency responders were attempting to get inside the damaged building to see if anyone was trapped.

One of the factory’s several manufacturing buildings sustained extensive damage, with metal strewn across the parking lot and across the street into a cornfield. Vehicles were overturned and piled onto others.

A number of tornadoes formed suddenly Thursday over Iowa, taking weather forecasters by surprise. Several buildings and an historic courthouse were damaged in the main business district of Marshalltown.

The tornadoes in Iowa come as severe storms could hit Ohio Friday.

According to Storm Team 4’s Dave Mazza, in Ohio, the chance for strong to severe storms appears to be in the late morning hours Friday until the early evening, with the best chances southwest of our area.  However, we still could see some storms with gusty winds and hail as well.

A slow moving system will crawl across the area on Saturday and Sunday with multiple chances of rain and storms.  Storms should be weaker over the weekend with highs near 80.
