This week, This Is Us made me realize just how much I miss picking up the telephone to call my mother. Kate deals with problems, big and small, by checking in with Rebecca.
When her dog swallows a rock and when her husband hits rock bottom, Kate needs the support she can only get from her mother. Mandy Moore (Rebecca) says “I think Rebecca and Kate’s relationship is not so unique. And I think that what makes it so sort of universal. It’s so relatable.”
What is also relatable is the satisfaction Rebecca gets from feeling needed. Her sometimes unsettled relationship with her only daughter gets all new validation from Kate’s need for a mother’s comfort. “I don’t think Rebecca has ever had this degree of comfort in her relationship with Kate. The fact that Kate is leaning so heavily on Rebecca, calling her for advice. It’s just new territory for her. I think she’s so excited about the possibility and how it might translate into her relationship as a grandmother with Kate and Toby’s child.”
The show also advanced important story lines for Randall, and his bid to win a city council race, and Kevin’s need to connect with his father’s Viet Nam story. I would get into more detail, but I feel the need to call my daughter.
