Tennessee high school closed after complaints of rat, snake & cockroach infestation

MEMPHIS, TN (WATN/WCMH) — An apparent rat, snake and cockroach infestation forced a Tennessee high school to cancel classes for two days.

Students began posting to social media about Kirby High crawling with critters. Video from a few days ago show a snake inside the school. You can hear students in the background talking about it.

“It came in the cafeteria and they got it out,” a student told WREG about a snake in the school. “Then yesterday in the gymnasium there was a rat under the bleachers.”

Shelby County School officials told NBC4 sister station WATN they’ve hired a pest control company after SCS maintenance crews couldn’t resolve the issue. The district said they’ve been working to take care of a pest problem for several days. They didn’t specify what type of pest, but they sent a notice to parents earlier this week that they were aware of it.

“There is no way in God’s creation that Kirby is the only school with a rodent in it,” said Helen Collins, a parent of a Kirby student.

Pest control officials hope to have the problem resolved so students can return to school on Thursday.
