A 3-month-old girl is in critical condition with multiple skull fractures after she was rushed to the hospital on Friday.
Deputies say 25-year-old Demarcus Lamar Johnson was arrested after the child showed up at Brandon Regional Hospital with severe brain trauma.
The hospital’s staff determined the child had multiple skull fractures with swelling on her brain.
“Totally crazy, how can that happen? Sad, it’s real sad,” said neighbor Carlos Gonzalez.
The child was eventually airlifted to All Children’s Hospital where she underwent emergency surgery and is listed in critical condition.
“I don’t know what is going on with his mind. How can you do that to a baby, you know that is an angel. That should not happen,” said Gonzalez.
According to an arrest report, Johnson was the only person with the baby when she was injured.
Deputies say Johnson is the mother’s live-in boyfriend, but he is not the child’s father.
He is charged with aggravated child abuse and had his first appearance Saturday morning. His bond was set at $200,000 and he’s not allowed to have contact with anyone under the age of 18.
The investigation is active and ongoing.
