PASADENA, TX (WCMH) – A single mother of five children is going viral because of a law school graduation photo with her five ‘mini lawyers.’
“It was very difficult,” Ieshia Champs told KPRC of her years in school.
She said her journey through school began in 2009 when a mentor at church encouraged her to get her GED.
Earlier that year, Champs says she lost everything she owned in a fire The father of two of her children died from. She lost her job, and her mother suffered a stroke. Champs tried to commit suicide that August.
After getting her GED, she then went to Houston Community College, University of Houston-Downtown, and finally Texas Southern University’s Thurgood Marshall School of Law.
Having five children made it difficult to manage, but the school had several resources to help.
“They’ll watch your children while you study,” Champs said. “They said, ‘Bring your kids, we’ll watch them.’ Professors let you bring your kids to class. … I made the best choice (in schools). This is like another family.”
She said professors would even give them coloring books while she was in class.
On May 11, she will graduate Magna Cum Laude from law school, USA Today reported.
“If God can take a little girl like me who had nothing and put me in a position to where I’m graduating from a wonderful law school in the top 15% of my class Magna Cum Laude with five children, he can do anything for you,” she told USA Today.
