BIRMINGHAM, AL (WCMH) — A police officer tased a 13-year-old boy suspected of having a gun near a middle school Wednesday morning.

It started when Birmingham police got a call about two youths being possibly armed a couple blocks from the school, NBC affiliate WVTM reports.

When officers arrived, they spotted the 13-year-old and a 15-year-old walking together. Police instructed the boys to stop, but the 13-year-old reportedly attempted to move and reached for his pocket, NBC4 sister station WIAT reports.

An officer then used his taser on the teen. While arresting the teen, officers discovered he had a .38 revolver in this pocket.

The 13-year-old was transported to Children’s Hospital to get checked out. His case will be handled in the juvenile court system.

The 15-year-old was unarmed. His parents were called to the scene and he was released into their custody.

This incident is still under investigation.
