Plastic straw ban includes jail time for repeat offenders

SANTA BARBARA (KRON) - Santa Barbara has approved a plastic straw ban that includes the possibility of jail time for repeat offenders.

The Santa Barbara city council unanimously passed the ordinance banning the sale or distribution of all plastic straws, stirrers, and cutlery on July 17.

The legislation prohibits restaurant employees from handing these items out unless a customer requests them.

The first violation is a warning while repeat offenders could face a hefty fine and even jail time, according to the ordinance.

However, Santa Barbara's Environmental Services Outreach Coordinator Bryan Latchford told KEYT that the city's municipal code is written to allow for escalating levels of enforcement and that jail time or a hefty fine would be the last line of defense.
