Air India will temporarily ground flights between Newark Liberty Airport and Mumbai after a number of passengers say their flight was infested with bed bugs, according to NBC New York.
Kashmira Tonsekar told New Zealand news outlet Stuff that she was returning with her family from a trip to the United States and checked the seat after her younger daughter complained of a rash.
She said she had seen a bed bug on her husband’s seat but dismissed it.
She said they alerted an airline worker, who sprayed insect repellent, but more bugs kept coming out from her husband’s seat and other seats, Stuff reports.
Pravin Tonsekar posted pictures of the bugs on Air India flight 144 on Twitter.
Saumya Shetty also posted a picture of large bites on her arm.
Both passengers said they were seated in business class.
“Experienced experts have carried out extensive service on the aircraft from fumigation to overhaul of the upholstery/ seat covers/carpets etc to ensure that passengers keep enjoying their in-flight experience with us as always without any complaint of inconvenience,” the airline said in a statement to NBC New York.
