A Baltimore police officer was fired after he was reportedly found drunk behind the wheel of his patrol car and slumped over.

Officer Aaron Heilman was in uniform and on duty when he was found Tuesday afternoon, three hours into his overtime shift on a crime suppression detail.

Heilman is charged with driving under the influence-related offenses. A Breathalyzer test indicated Heilman’s blood alcohol level was 0.22, nearly three times the legal limit, Police spokesman T.J. Smith said.

Witnesses say they saw the officer slumped over in a parked police cruiser,

One person tried to wake him up.

“I started banging on the window pretty hard. And he came to a little bit and I asked him to wind down his window. And he did. And as he wound down his window I ask him if he was OK. He said he was, but … he was a little disoriented and also smelled what I thought was alcohol. He was having a very difficult time walking. He had an officer on each side of him. They had to assist him in walking.”

An officer who assisted him removed his gun.

The intoxicated officer, who had been recently hired by the department was still in a probationaly period.

He was immediately fired by Interim Police Commissioner Gary Tuggle.

Tuggle called the matter a safety issue.

Tuggle said he “simply won’t tolerate it.”
