Mother, daughter meet for first time in 52 years

When Valerie Leatherwood was 20 years old she found herself unexpectedly pregnant.

A nun, who was a supervisor at the nursing home Leatherwood was working at and sent her away to hide the pregnancy.

Five weeks later, a baby girl was born.

Leatherwood gave up the baby and never told her family.

Now, years later, her long-lost daughter, Mia Keske Anderson, has found her and they reunited over the weekend.

“I ended up with this phone call a couple months ago from a daughter that I thought I’d go to my grave not telling anybody about. That was a 52-year-old secret I kept,” Leatherwood said.

Leatherwood’s sister, Diane Mindt, said her niece asked her if anybody in the family had given up a baby for adoption.

Mindt said Leatherwood admitted giving a little girl away 52 years ago.

“I mean you could’ve knocked me over with a feather,” Mindt said.

Keske said she is happy to be reunited with her birth mother.

“I have all these weird feelings going on right now. I was scared, nervous, excited. I wanted to find her and it worked. I just want to get to know both of them. It’s nice to see where I get my cheeks from,” Keske said.
