GRAND RAPIDS, MI (WOOD) — A man was arrested for allegedly urinating on a 5-year-old girl and using racial slurs toward her, police say.
The Grand Rapids Police Department said the incident happened late Wednesday afternoon in an alley.
GRPD officers processed the alley for evidence and interviewed the girl, who is black, and her parents. Officers also talked to three witnesses, ages 5 and 7.
The victim and witnesses said the man urinated on the girl and then called her the N-word.
After getting a description of the man, officer canvassed the neighborhood and identified a suspect. He wasn’t at his home when they went there, but a neighbor called police to tell them when he returned.
The suspect, a white man around the age of 60, was arrested without incident and jailed. GRPD said he faced a felony charge, though a late Wednesday release did not list that charge.
In early 2017, the suspect was involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility for at least 60 days. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia, according to Kent County probate court records. At the time, a social worker reported that he had not been taking his prescribed medication.
Another social worker said he was “easily provoked, delusional and sexually preoccupied due to increasing psychosis,” the court records show. A psychiatrist noted he was focused on a young woman as well as a history of aggression and criminal activity towards young females.
GRPD’s Family Services detective are handling the case. Police said the girl and witnesses will be offered counseling through the Children’s Advocacy Center.
