The old saying goes: ‘See a penny, pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luck.’

Today’s a perfect day for that saying as Thursday is National Lucky Penny Day!

The first U.S. pennies were minted more than 200 years ago and made from copper.

Nowadays, they’re mostly made out of zinc.

And it costs 1.4 cents to make each one cent coin.

And while some economists have called for the penny to be abolished, others aren’t so sure.

People put them in piggy banks, collect them in jars and most of all, find one lying in the street and pick it up because, just as the old saying mentioned, that coin could give you good luck!
