Halloween spending climbs to $9 billion

NEW YORK (NBC News) Retailers can expect treats this Halloween according to a new survey from the National Retail Federation.

It found shoppers on average are willing to spend $87 per person, or pet, on Halloween.

“It’s because people like to dress up, not just their kids, but adults are really liking to dress up, millennials really embrace this holiday,” says the federation’s Katherine Cullen.

It’s that embrace by millennials that Cullen says is driving much of this fearless approach to spending on Halloween.

And because of rising popularity of the video game, “Fortnite” characters are topping the list for kids’ costumes this year.
