A trail for bike riders to travel coast to coast will come right through Ohio.
It will be called the Great American Rail-Trail and it will connect more than 125 existing trails and 90 trail gaps in 12 states.
This trail will give people in Columbus the opportunity to hop on their bikes and ride to each coast.
“We couldn’t be more proud and happy to celebrate this momentous event for the Great American Rail Trail to come through Columbus, Ohio on our very own Camp Chase Rail Trail,” said Tony Collins who is the director of Parks and Recreation in the City of Columbus.
The idea of the Great American Rail Trail is to connect existing trails from Washington D.C. to Washington State, which is more than 3,700 miles apart.
Organizers with Rails-to-Trails Conservancy say Ohio’s Erie Trail is a major portion of this trail and Ohioans are excited.
“It’s great fun. It’s great to just kind of get away from the hassle of working and everything,” said Columbus native Jack Jenny.
He and his family say they love to travel the Erie Trail and others in the country.
“We’ve ridden a trail from Pittsburgh to DC. We’ve ridden a trail across Missouri.”
Now, he can go farther.
Jenny said he was a believer in this idea as soon as he heard the news.
“Oh, we want to be a part of it and support the whole idea of linking these trails together.”
Organizers say about 52 percent of the trail is complete. They’re just trying to work with state legislators to fill in the gaps where there are no trails.
