LAKE COUNTY, FL (WFLA) – The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is offering a reward for information after a gopher tortoise was found completely covered in red spray paint with concrete on its limbs in Lake County.

FWC says the tortoise was found in the middle of County Road 455, south of Montverde.

Two good Samaritans spotted the turtle and took it to a wildlife rehabilitator.

Gopher tortoises are threatened and are a protected species in Florida.

It is both illegal and harmful to the health of a gopher tortoise to apply man-made substances to any part of their body or shell.

If you have any information about who may have done this, call the Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922), call #FWC or *FWC on your cell phone, or text or email Tip@MyFWC.com.
