Fight over ‘Make America Great Again’ hat ends in teen’s arrest

EL DORADO COUNTY, CA (WCMH) — A fight over a “Make America Great Again” hat at a California high school ended with one student’s arrest.

Deputies say a high school student berated another student for wearing the hat with the presidents campaign slogan. She was seen on camera grabbing the hat and throwing it on the ground.

When a teacher tried to intervene, the student slapped the teacher’s arm.

The school district wouldn’t comment on the arrest, but it issued a statement to KXTL-TV reading, in part:

“Student and staff safety is our highest priority and the UMHS administration will continue to cooperate with the El Dorado County Sheriff`s Office as the incident is being investigated.”

Brooke Peterson says her boyfriend was the one wearing the hat.

“If you truly believe in something you have every right to express it in everyday if you`re really passionate about it,” Peterson said.

Other students say school isn`t the place for political messages, no matter if you’re Republican or Democrat.

“Politicians views should stay at home,” one student said. “The hat, I understand it. But it should just stay at home.”
