Deputy stops traffic to shoot ‘strange’ groundhog that was crossing the road

U.S. & World

Some people in Maryland are upset after seeing video of a police officer shooting a groundhog that was blocking traffic.

Video recorded by a bystander shows traffic stopped on both sides of a road while a deputy confronts the groundhog in the road.

At one point, the woodchuck running toward the deputy, instead of away. That behavior led the deputy to believe the animal was dangerous.

The deputy then pulled his gun and opened fire.

The video quickly went viral after it was posted on Facebook.

WBAL reported that many residents contacted their station with concerns about the killing of the animal and the way the situation was handled.

The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement, “He realized that it was not responding as expected for an animal that was not being cornered or trapped. Believing the groundhog to be either sick or injured, the deputy then put the animal down for the public’s safety.”

The Carroll County Humane Society agreed that the behavior of the animal was strange, but wouldn’t comment on the deputy’s actions in this case.
