Deputies in Kansas never expected to see an alligator in the middle of the road.
But one showed up and gave the officers a hard time.
And it was all caught on video.
“They may be used to gators in Florida, but they’re a strange sight here in the Sunflower State. So much so, that sheriff deputies didn’t quite know what to do,” said Natalie Cowan, 20, said.
Cowan found the alligator while driving home Monday night.
The gator was a pet that had escaped from a neighbor’s property.
The four-foot gator lunged at a law enforcement officer after the officer got too close and created some anxious moments for Cowan and sheriff’s deputies.
“So the alligator instantly starts hissing and starts running towards us and it just freaks me out,” Cowan said. “The officer actually like kind of drew his gun. He was like if this thing starts running at me again, I have to put it down,” Cowan said.
Cowan said she saw the alligator after seeing a raccoon cross in front of her.
“I honestly started laughing. I was like this has to be a joke. It’s not real. So then I just start looking at it, I shine my flashlight on it and I see it breathing, and like kind of moving. So I was like, oh gosh,” Cowan said.
For more than 15 minutes, Cowan said the alligator was motionless in the middle of the road, blocking her path.
“Ends up being three cop cars in the middle of nowhere in Basehor, Kansas for an alligator. That doesn’t happen,” Cowan said.
The gator found its way home after everyone left it alone.
No one was hurt and deputies did not issue any tickets.
