Shocking video out of Southwest Florida shows a trooper being hit by a car while responding to a crash.
The crash happened just before 6 p.m. Monday in Palm Beach County. According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, Trooper Jeremy Medastin was responding to a three-car crash on Interstate 95 when it happened.
Trooper Medastin was walking toward his patrol car when a Toyota Prius started veering toward him. FHP investigators say the driver of the car was accelerating in an attempt to merge with traffic but started hydroplaning. The road was wet, causing the driver to lose control and spin out.
The Prius crossed several lanes of traffic and hit another car before continuing toward Trooper Medastin. The trooper saw the car heading his way and jumped up onto the barrier wall to avoid getting hit.
Dashcam video shows the car slamming into the barrier wall as Trooper Medastin clings to the ledge. According to the crash report, Medastin wasn’t able to move up the wall fast enough and the car hit his feet and legs.
Trooper Medastin continued clinging to the barrier wall after being hit because he couldn’t walk. EMS crews eventually responded to help him down and take him to the hospital.
The driver of the Prius was ticketed for driving too fast for the conditions.
