A California wildfire victim returned to the charred remains of his family’s home and found the one thing that mattered to him, an engagement ring that he planned to give to his girlfriend.

Nick Maes held out little hope that he would find the engagement ring that he locked in a safe at his parents’ home in Paradise, California.

There was very little left of the home when he arrived, but the safe was still intact.

He used a crowbar and hammer to open the safe and found the ring he planned to give to his girlfriend.

The heat from the fire melted the ring, but the diamonds remained intact.

He plans to have the diamonds and sapphire removed and reset in a new setting. Then, he’ll give it to his girlfriend.

As of Thursday, Nov. 15, the wildfire has killed at least 56 people and authorities say 130 are unaccounted for.
