EDMONDS, WA (KING) Witnesses say a hardcover book likely saved a woman’s life in a deadly shooting.
The shooting happened Saturday in a restaurant parking lot in Edmonds, Washington.
Police say a 56-year old man tried to shoot his sister as the family was gathering for a meal at a restaurant,
He first fired at the woman as she sat in her family’s SUV, then turned the shotgun on himself.
Two nurses who were eating at the restaurant rushed out to give first aid.
Others who ran to help say they noticed pieces of a book on the ground.
“She was shot through the chest by a shotgun at close range, but was holding her hardback book against her chest. That deflected the fatal shot, I guess,” said witness Ashley Young.
The victim’s young son and husband were in the vehicle at the time, but weren’t injured.
