Bizarre delivery to California police department sparks suspicious death investigation

A bizarre delivery to a California police station has turned into a suspicious death investigation after officers realized it wasn’t a Halloween prank.

According to KGO-TV, two people showed up at an Oakland Police Department Friday morning with a human skull in tow.

“It was decomposed and had a little bit of flesh on it,” Oakland Police Sgt. Michael Cardoza told KGO-TV. “I can say in my years of service, I’ve never had a human skull delivered to the police station.

Police say the two people who brought the skull in found it in plain sight in a backyard in west Oakland.

“They thought it was real enough that it had to be brought to our attention immediately,” Sgt. Cardoza said.

At first, officers thought it was a Halloween prank, but upon seeing the skull, they knew it was real. Now, the coroner’s office is working to identify the remains and determine a cause of death, which was made more difficult because the skull was moved.

“I’m not saying there’s any foul play in this at all, except for how it got here. That’s something we’re working on,” Sgt. Cardoza said. “If I found it, I have to call the police before I touch it.”

Investigators are sifting through missing persons cases to see if any of them could be a match for the remains and they’re working to locate the rest of the body.
