Biker ‘lucky to be alive’ after scary road rage incident

U.S. & World

SARASOTA, Fla. (WFLA) – The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office needs your help to track down the driver involved in a scary road rage incident caught on camera.

Around 5 p.m. Sunday, Darin Hendrickson got into a heated confrontation with a driver on Beneva Road.

“I was brake-checked, we all know what brake-checked is. He slammed on the brakes and made me try to go into the back end of him and rear-end him,” said Hendrickson.

The situation got heated.

“I got pebbled with like, a ton of metal. Sparks were flying off the bike. I don’t know what they threw, I’m assuming [spare] change of some sort,” he recalled.

Hendrickson tried to get the driver to pull over when suddenly the car swerved over and slammed into Hendrickson, leaving him tumbling onto the sidewalk.

“I was just like, man, I’m fixing to die. And I just pictured my son, I got a one-year-old and that guy was all that was flashing through my mind,” recalled Hendrickson.

Hendrickson was badly bruised and swollen. And his bike is totaled.

The driver was in a gray Mazda 3 hatchback with a large decal on the rear window.

Hendrickson wants him caught and brought to justice.

“Fact of the matter is, you tried to kill me and that is gonna leave a lifelong scar in my mind,” Hendrickson said. “I hope he steps up to the plate and just does and accepts his responsibilities.”

Hendrickson urges drivers to be cautious around bikers.

“If I’m not endangering you, just because you don’t like the sound of my motorcycle or you don’t like how aggressive I’m driving, why do you think you can take it into your hands and take me out?” he said.

“The aggressive riding that we do, as long as it does not involve you, I don’t think that it’s your place to put us in a position to stop doing what we’re doing,” he added.

The driver could be charged with aggravated battery. If you have any information, call the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.
