Amber Alert over: 3 children found safe, father in custody

U.S. & World

STURGIS, MI (WOOD) — Sturgis police have canceled an Amber Alert for three children who were taken by their father who was believed to have been armed and dangerous.

The three children — 2-year-old Aldo Cruz, 4-year-old Matteo Nieves and 5-year-old Chelsey Lopez — were found safe with 37-year-old Fernando Cruz at house where they were abducted from hours earlier.

Authorities said Cruz had taken the children from the house located in the 100 block of Pioneer Street in Sturgis Wednesday night. He was believed to have been armed and dangerous. Cruz also made comments he was going to harm himself and the children, police said.

The Sturgis Police Department issued the Amber Alert for the three children early Thursday morning.

Police said the search started after a report Cruz assaulted his girlfriend and drove away with the children. Cruz was believed to have been in Indiana, but police received a tip he had returned to the house in Sturgis.

After speaking to police, Cruz turned himself without incident and handed over the children to police.

Police said the children appeared to be in good health, but will undergo health evaluations as a precaution.
