Amber Alert canceled for missing 14-month-old boy, grim outlook for finding boy alive

U.S. & World

SODUS, NY (WFLA/WIVB/AP) – An Amber Alert has been canceled for a missing 14-month-old New York boy.

The search for Owen Hidalgo-Calderon has been a daily quest by authorities since the body of his 18-year-old mother, Selena Hidalgo-Calderon, was found Wednesday.

On Monday, the Wayne County Sheriff offered a grim outlook for finding Owen Hidalgo-Calderon alive.

An Amber Alert was issued Friday for the boy missing since May 16. It said he was taken under circumstances that led police to believe he was in danger of serious harm or death.
The mother’s body was found at a farm in the Wayne County town of Sodus where she and her boyfriend, 25-year-old Edward Reyes, worked.

Reyes was arrested Wednesday night on charges of tampering with evidence. He has not been charged with the death of Selena Hidalgo-Calderon.

Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts says he admitted burying the woman but not killing her.

Authorities say Reyes is a Mexican citizen who was caught entering the U.S. illegally last year.
