Record Store Day is this Saturday, making it the perfect excuse to get some new (or used) vinyl.
Record Store Day is an internationally recognized day to celebrate independently owned record stores. Now in its tenth year, independent stores all over the world celebrate with live music, exclusive releases, cook outs, artist meet-and-greets and more. This year, there are a ton of great titles that will be available at independent record stores (I’m personally looking forward to snagging a copy of Patty Smyth and Scandal’s “Goodbye to You! Best of the ’80s Live!”)
While you may think that today’s technology has made records obsolete, Columbus has a thriving vinyl scene. I asked NBC4 viewers what their favorite record stores in central Ohio are, and here’s what they said:
Where: 116 E. Long St., Columbus
Spoonful Records is the top dog for record stores among NBC4 viewers. The selection, pricing and customer service are three standout points for fans. Spoonful has even received the honor of “Best Record Store in Ohio” from Vinyl Me, Please, a record of the month club.
This year for RSD, Spoonful will be holding a PromoWest ticket raffle for musical acts like Portugal. the Man, Frank Turner, Cold War Kids, and the Melvins. They will also be offering 25% off used records, giving away RSD swag bags, and coupons for early customers for scarce and expensive RSD releases. Check their Facebook page Friday night for photos of the exclusive records the store will be selling.
Where: 2960 N. High St., Columbus
Founded in 2003, Lost Weekend Records ups the game when it comes to vinyl in Columbus. The owner Kyle is extremely knowledgeable about music and the selection is amazing, whether you’re looking for a rare find or want to explore bands in the local music scene.
This year for RSD, Lost Weekend will be running a four-day sale, with 33% off all used LPs, 45% off used 45s, 10% off new merchandise, 78s for just 78 cents, and almost everything else will be 20% off (excluding RSD releases). Lost Weekend will also be holding raffles and giving out swag bags, and it’s the only place you will be able to get a four-song EP from Quemado on RSD.
Where: 2500 Summit St., Columbus
Used Kids Records has been a staple in the Columbus music scene since the late 1980s. If you’re looking for used music, this is the place. The selection is huge, and includes not only vinyl, but CDs, cassettes and 8-tracks.
On Saturday, Used Kids will have performances form J Rawls, Fluids, Bombeardo, Tommy Jay’s Latest Freak Show, Grunge Dad, ILLOGIC, The Thees, The Rough Touch, Burial Mountain, Nukkehammer and more from noon until close. Customers can also take 10% off everything in the store (excluding RSD releases) and get free pizza.
Where: 3037 Indianola Ave., Columbus
Elizabeth’s Records has a deceptively large collection of vinyl, CDs and more, and the owners are very knowledgeable. They have a great selection, from rock to jazz to international to pop, as well as some great rare finds.
For RSD 2018, the shop will have Stan Smith and Lisa Bella Donna performing, as well as the John Evan Band. Customers can also take 20% off all vinyl, excluding RSD releases.
Where: 1155 N. High St., Columbus
If your musical taste runs more on the alternative side of things, Magnolia Thunderpussy is the place for you. They have a huge selection of underground artists that you would have a difficult time finding anywhere else. They also have one of the biggest 99-cent selections in the city. (Bonus: Their t-shirt selection is out of this world!)
The store hasn’t responded to an inquiry about any additional specials they may have on RSD, but you can check out their website for the full list of RSD releases they will have.
Where: 2579 N. High St., Columbus
With more than 50,000 LPs, it’s no wonder why Records Per Minute made NBC4 viewers’ list of favorites. You’re bound to find what you’re looking for with their extensive stock. Customers love the friendly demeanor and the expertise of the owner Steve, and how organized the store is.
For RSD, Records Per Minute is having a 20% off sale all weekend for all non-RSD release items, Pro-Ject and Rega Equipment, and the Hand Made Wooden Record Crates, and RSD releases are priced at the recommended retail price or lower. Check their Facebook page for a full list of RSD titles.
