Watch your step: Nearly 100 manhole covers stolen by scrappers in Cincinnati

State News

CINCINNATI, OH (WCMH) – Police in Cincinnati are looking for looking for thieves who are stealing manhole covers for cash.

Investigators say the scrappers are dressing up as construction workers and ripping manhole covers and storm drains out of the ground in broad daylight and selling the metal for cash.

The city says the repairs are costing the city thousands.

“We’re going to be calling all the scrapyards. We’ve already started calling them and asking them to keep a look out for this,” said Deb Leonard with the Greater Cincinnati Metropolitan Sewer District.

City officials say there have been nearly 100 thefts so far. Scrappers who sell the items will only get a couple dollars each.
