Law enforcement officials are searching for an inmate who escaped from an extradition services company in Wayne County Friday evening just before 9 p.m.

The inmate, Said Ali EL-KHATIB, 32, escaped at the southbound rest area on Interstate 71.

The suspect was being transported from the NYPD to the Allen County Sheriff in Indiana, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

He escaped after he asked the transportation company, Affordable Extradition Service, to use the restroom.

Troopers from the Medina, Wooster and Ashland Posts, along with OSHP Aviation and the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office searched the area to include vacant buildings and residences southwest of the rest area.

The search was discontinued at about 1 a.m. Saturday morning until daybreak.

The OSHP and area law enforcement partners will continue to search the area Saturday for the escapee.

The inmate is 5’11 and weighs 135 pounds.

He has brown eyes, black and brown hair, according to authorities.

He was last seen wearing tan pants and a tan shirt (no lettering), handcuffed, wearing a waist chain, and shackled on one ankle.

He is known to have violent tendencies.

The US Marshals are asking residents in the area to keep your homes, buildings, and cars locked. They also say to report any stolen valuables.

If located, don’t approach him. Call the Ohio State Highway Patrol at 330-264-0575, #677 or dial 911.
