Authorities are investigating after human remains were found in a fire pit at the home of an Akron woman who has been missing since last week.

According to WEWS, a family member of Robin Freitag found the gruesome scene as they were searching the home’s backyard. Freitag, 53, was reported missing last week and her family said no one has heard from her in a month.

Police were already investigating Freitag’s disappearance but do not have any leads. Summit County Medical Examiner Dr. Lisa Kohler said it’s too early to tell if the remains are Freitag’s or if they are those of someone else.

“This is obviously a critical component for us to identify the individual and to let the next of kin know for certain that this is their loved one,” Dr. Kohler told WEWS.

Police said it could take days or even weeks before the remains are identified, but the case is being treated as a homicide.

“Well of course, we’re going to treat it as a suspicious death, potential homicide at this point, but until we have a chance to really examine the remains, we don’t know exactly what we’re dealing with,” Dr. Kohler said.
