(WKBN) – The Ohio Turnpike says it plans to modernize its system by removing toll gates.

Construction to remove all toll booths for E-Z pass customers on the Ohio Turnpike begins this year

The new system will provide non-stop travel for E-Z pass holders at speeds of 70 miles per hour for those driving the entire length of the turnpike.

Other E-Z pass drivers will only have to slow down to 10 or 15 miles per hour.

The Turnpike said its toll collection was implemented in 2009 and is approaching the end of its useful life. It says 89 percent of customers support a plan to remove toll gates.

The new toll collection system should be complete by early 2022.
