Ohio police officer rescues 8 from burning duplex

GIRARD, OH (WKBN) – A Girard police officer is being hailed a hero after helping get eight people out of a burning duplex over the weekend.

Fire investigators are still looking into how the Saturday night fire started but they think it originated in the back corner of the apartment building.

On Monday morning, firefighters were back at the duplex on S. Davis Street, checking out the area where they think the fire started.

“Fire’s still under investigation,” said Luke Grunder, president of IAFF Local 1220. “They’re not sure if it started on the exterior rear left corner or started in the siding.”

Officer Mathew Jamison was the first emergency responder on the scene. In his body camera video, you can see the flames as he turns a corner in the upstairs apartment.

“He was instrumental in saving the lives, I believe, of those children because I believe at that point, with the smoke banking down, it doesn’t take long,” Grunder said.

Luckily, no one was hurt in the fire but the building is a total loss.
