COLUMBUS (WCMH) — A new report says Ohio is among the worst states in the country for puppy mills.
The Humane Society of the United States lists Ohio as number 2 on its annual “horrible hundred” list.
The list looks at inspection records for commercial breeders.
Violations range from neutering puppies without anesthesia to having moldy food and small cages.
The report says Ohio has 13 puppy mills; click here to access the full report.
Missouri came in at number one on the list with 23 mills.
There is a push to crack down on puppy mills in Ohio. Attorney General Mike DeWine certified the position for the “Ohio Puppy Mill Prevention Amendment” back in September. Right now, it is in the hands of the state ballot board to determine if it’s a single issue or a multiple-issue amendment.
