Giant hornets make themselves at home in Ohio man’s El Camino

ALLIANCE, OH (WKBN) – A local bee man came across an unusual nest revealing a newer species of wasp to the area.

Travis Watson is the owner of The Bee Man, LLC. For the first time in 13 years, Watson said he was nervous handling such a problem.

A European hornet’s nest is shown in the Facebook video that went viral. You can see hornets swarming the 1986 El Camino, which sits on a property near Alliance.

Richard Sabina said two weeks ago, there was nothing inside. Then, he started seeing hornets as big as his thumb.

“I wasn’t going close to it at 85 years old. I quit doing that kinda crazy stuff,” he said. “I stay away.”

So Sabina called Watson, “The Bee Man.”

Watson said he determined that the European hornets were getting in the car through a crack in the passenger window.

“I walked over, saw the nest. I better record this one,” he said, laughing.

That video has been extremely popular online.

“I got so many calls today, my phone stopped working, just from people seeing it,” Watson said.

The nest was hanging inside of the car, along with 1,000 hornets.

The Bee Man suited up and used a combination of pesticides to exterminate the nest.

The European hornet has only been in the area for about five years.

“It’s not concerning in that they’re pretty docile when they’re away from their nest. The thing that’s really concerning about them is they aggressively defend their nest, so as long as you keep a good eye — July or later, that’s when they’re really at full strength,” he said.

Watson saved a portion of the nest for a person in Pennsylvania and a Michigan woman who wanted a specimen of the hornet.

Sabina had seen enough of the European Hornets. He spent $125 to get rid of them.

“I’m very glad ’cause I got the car for sale, and I couldn’t sell it that way, if somebody came to look at it, that’s for sure,” he said.
