TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a SnapChat video that allegedly recorded the driver going 115 miles per hour before a deadly crash that claimed the lives of five people, including two children, Wednesday night.
The video was allegedly discovered on the SnapChat page of 19-year-old Jolie Bartolome, FHP says. Jolie was the passenger in the Volkswagen Golf driven by 22-year-old Pablo Cortes III. Both were killed in the crash.
While eyewitnesses claim the Golf was street racing, investigators say there’s no evidence to prove it. However, FHP investigators say the video supports the belief that speed played a role in the events leading to the crash.
Cortes was speeding westbound Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard when he lost control and crossed over the median of the road colliding head-on with a Toyota minivan, which caught fire. The VW then rotated and collided with two other vehicles. The crash happened Wednesday night around 9:47 p.m.
Killed in the minivan was 39-year-old Marianela Murillo of Tampa and her two children – 9-year-old John Bernal and 10-year-old Isabell Bernal.
Murillo and her two youngest children, along with her teenager, Lina Bernal, were driving home from church when they were hit head-on. Lina and her cousin visiting from Colombia, Luisa Louisa, were the only ones to survive in that van. They are both in critical condition.
