Short North street named for Nina West

COLUMBUS (WCMH) — Beginning Tuesday, Hull Alley in the Short North will be renamed ‘The Nina West Way,’ after the reigning RuPaul’s Drag Race Miss Congeniality.

The sign placed at the intersection of Hull Alley and North High Street bears Nina West’s name along with the message ‘be kind.’ It also features colors from the gay and trans pride flags.

Nina West was named the Grand Marshall of the 2019 Columbus Pride Parade. West competed on season 11 of RuPaul’s Drag Race, placing sixth, but took the prize of Miss Congeniality.

A crowdfunding campaign raised the $800 fee to install the sign.

“Nina West is not only a pillar in the Short North Community, but a leader for equality and kindness,” said Betsy Pandora, Executive Director of the Short North Alliance. “To those of us who have known her kindness for years, it is a joy to watch the nation discover it through her recent success. We join many in our community to celebrate her success and showcase her message with the renaming of Hull Alley as The Nina West West Way.”

“You just have to love her… and Andrew Levitt… who’s also known as Nina West,” said Stonewall Columbus executive director AJ Casey.”[Andrew] is just as generous and kind in real life as Nina is on the stage, so they deserve every piece of good publicity that they get, and I think the world should be a lot more like Nina West– the world that Nina West is working to create.”

The sign will officially be unveiled at 3 p.m. Friday.
