Sheriff: Homeowner nearly severs intruder’s hand with machete during break-in

A man’s hand was nearly severed by a homeowner using a machete after a break-in West Virginia.

Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle says 38-year-old Michael Cupp II entered the home of Shannon Steele, in Ona, West Virginia Tuesday morning.

Sheriff Zerkle is not sure what lead up to the incident or if the two men knew each other. He says it appears Cupp entered the home and approached Steele who felt threatened and struck Cupp with the machete.

The incident is still being investigated and charges are pending.

Cupp was taken to the hospital. His condition is not known at this time.

The sheriff says Cupp is expected to recover, but it is unclear if his hand can be reattached.
