San Antonio Chief: Officer fired for giving homeless man feces sandwich

SAN ANTONIO, TX (KXAN) – A San Antonio police officer is off the force for, what the department’s chief calls, “a vile disgusting act.”

According to My San Antonio, several sources confirmed that bike-patrol officer Matthew Luckhurst, a five-year veteran, placed feces between two pieces of bread, put the ‘sandwich’ in a sytrofoam container and gave it to a homeless man in May. He then allegedly bragged about it to a fellow officer.

“The officer reported that he told Luckhurst to go back and throw it away,” San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus said in a statement. “The officer said he saw Luckhurst go back and he assumed that Luckhurst discarded the container.”

Internal Affairs was alerted by fellow officers about the situation in July.

“It’s a disgrace to the department. It’s a disgrace to the badge. And it’s embarrassing that someone would do something like that, ever do something like that,” McManus said about the incident.

Luckhurst’s attorney has been claiming the incident was a joke that got out of control. “There are no eyewitnesses or video recordings and no statement from the homeless person,” he said.

The homeless man has not been found.

The San Antonio Police Officers Association said Luckhurst does not receive representation after being fired. “It’s his conduct and behavior he had to answer for,” said SAPOA president Mike Helle.

“The chief took the necessary action he thought he had to take.”
