PARKER COUNTY, TX (WCMH) — When a Texas jailer stopped breathing, a group of inmates broke out of their holding cell to save his life.

According to NBC News, the inmates were in the Weatherford District Courts Building, June 23, when the guard outside their cell slumped over.

“He was just talking to them, and he just kind of collapsed,” Capt. Mark Arnett with the Parker County Sheriff’s Office told NBC News. “As soon as the jailer went down, they started to yell.”

When their screams didn’t help, the eight men, who were all shackled, broke out of their cell.

“They grabbed his radio and tried to radio for help,” Arnett said.

Deputies upstairs eventually came down to the scene, and called emergency personnel who performed CPR and used a defibrillator on the guard.

“He stopped breathing. They couldn’t find a pulse on him,” Arnett said. However, the jailer is doing better and is expected to back to work on Monday.

Arnett praised the prisoners’ quick actions. “They definitely saved his life. There’s no doubt about that,” he said. What others are clicking on:
