DISCUSSION

The weather cleared through the day on Sunday, bringing us a pleasant change from the usual endless rounds of storms that have historically plagued the Memorial Tournament. The only rain that fell during the tournament came in a 15-minute shower Thursday shortly after noon.

Yet, on Saturday, strong storms accompanied by high winds and hail marched across the northern part of the state, triggering numerous warnings as far south as northern Marion and Morrow counties, but stayed well north of the action at Muirfield.

The building line of thunderstorms ahead of a cold front eventually sagged south overnight, accompanied by frequent lightning, heavy rain and hail nearly an inch in diameter. Many counties in central Ohio were under severe thunderstorm warnings between 12:30 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Saturday night, as storms put on quite a light show.

There were no reports of damage in the region, likely because storm winds were not overly strong compared to the system that battered portions of Ohio on Memorial Day and into the night.

Fortunately, the rain was gone by daybreak, although a few cells popped up in southeastern Ohio along the boundary early this afternoon and quickly moved southeast into West Virginia. A severe thunderstorm watch was is in effect Sunday afternoon for the southeastern corner of Ohio.

The talked-about gauzy sky, with brilliant sunsets and sunrises in recent days, reflect the transport of smoke from wildfires ablaze in western Canada across northern Alberta.

Temperatures hovered in the low 70s — a refreshing change. Northerly winds behind the front will usher in drier air overnight, allowing morning temperatures to tumble into the 40s!

Sunshine a pleasantly cool weather will prevail on Monday.
