COLUMBUS (WCMH)– Columbus Police are investigating after a shooting Friday morning near the corner of Wedgewood Drive and Eakin Road.

Police and medics were called to the 700 block of Doulton Court just before 2:00 am.

Police say the call originally came in as a report of shots fired. The caller reported hearing two shots.

While police were responding, a second call was made to report a victim had been found. Police found a gunshot victim in a hallway near the front of the building.

The victim, now identified as 22-year-old Cody Virgil Nichols, was pronounced dead on the scene a few minutes later.

This is the 78th homicide in Columbus in 2017, and one of several shootings in the same area this year.

In July, two men were killed during an apparent targeted home invasion after they were taken hostage in the same area.

Three people were shot in the area April 17, with two of the victims dying.

Anyone with information on these shootings can call the Columbus Division of Police Homicide Unit at 614-645-4730 or Central Ohio Crime Stoppers at 614-461-8477.
