An Olentangy Local Schools teacher was arrested late Monday on felony rape charges.
According to the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, 39-year-old Matthew D. Rausenberg was arrested and charged with rape and gross sexual imposition.
According to court records, Rausenberg’s alleged victims are a 10-year-old girl and an 8-year-old girl,
Records also showed that Rausenberg was the teacher of the 8-year-old at the time the alleged incidents occurred and both incidents happened on school grounds.
Investigators say that Rausenberg is an employee at Arrowhead Elementary School in the Olentangy Local School District.
Prosecutors said there may be more victims.
The Sheriff’s office could not say whether the victim was a student at the school.
The district’s website lists Rausenberg as a third-grade teacher.
The Sheriff’s office says that the school was notified of the investigation Monday afternoon at which point he was immediately removed from school grounds.
Rausenberg is on unpaid administrative leave while the investigation is ongoing.
Rausenberg was arraigned Tuesday and had bond set a $1 million.
NBC4 talked with Olentangy Local Superintendent Wade Lucas.
He met with parents this morning after alerting then that the third grade teacher was no longer in the school as of last night.
He says parents had many questions as to what happened, and how they should handle questions to their children moving forward.
Lucas says that the district has gone through so many emotions in such a short amount of time.
He says it went from shock, because all indications were this was a well-liked, popular teacher, to anger that allegations like this are now coming to light.
Lucas tells NBC4 they investigated Rausenberg 2 years ago when an anonymous parent contacted the district.
During their investigation, Lucas says Rausenberg admitted to allowing some students to sit on his lap during reading time.
The district says that he was told that was not allowed, and that would stop immediately.
No criminal charges were filed by the parent, and the district entered a written reprimand in the teachers file.
District officials say it was the only reprimand on his teaching record in about 12 years with the district.
Lucas sent the following statement to parents Tuesday morning:
I need to make you aware of a situation that occurred Monday at Arrowhead Elementary School. The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office arrested teacher Matt Rausenberg on charges of rape and gross sexual imposition.
Our first course of action was to immediately place Mr. Rausenberg on unpaid administrative leave, relieve him from any and all teaching responsibilities, and remove him from the school setting. He is currently in the Delaware County Jail awaiting arraignment. A media release issued by the Sheriff’s Department this morning can be found below.
We are deeply concerned about this incident and these allegations. Our focus is on the students and ensuring they receive appropriate support. We will have additional counselors in the building as needed.
I know many of you will have questions about this. Feel free to contact Principal Luke Carlisle at the school at 740-657-4650. If he is not immediately available he will return messages as soon as possible.
Investigators ask that anyone with information related to this investigation contact the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office Detective Bureau at 740-833-2837.
